Veteran director Robert Wise (West Side Story) directs the first theatrical Star Trek adventure. Though fan reaction during the original run was mixed, the film became an unquestioned box office smash and set the stage for a spirited run of Star Trek cinematic adventures. The films finds Captain Kirk (William Shatner, of course) commanding the crew of the Enterprise into contact with V’Ger an omnipotent entity tearing its way towards Earth. Kirk and his comrades must find a way to determine the threat posed by V’Ger to Starfleet and to take the appropriate action.

New cast members featured in Star Trek: The Motion Picture include a new First Officer on board the enterprise (Stephen Collins) and an alluring (and hairless) new Lieutenant (Persis Khambatta). While this film has its obvious weak and strong points, it remains essential viewing for Trekkies and deserves a place in your collection of Star Trek DVDs.
