Star Trek Nemesis disappointed many Trekkies upon its release. We at Star Trek DVD were certainly among those who felt the film could have been better. Still it has a number of strong points, including some terrific special effects and we feel it is still a worthy addition to a Star Trek library.

Star Trek Insurrection is an underrated adventure that finds the crew of the Enterprise locked in battle over the fate of a people with a mysterious life-giving energy on its planet. While some feel that Insurrection continues the odd-numbered curse, we think it is one of the best Next Generation DVDs.

Star Trek First Contact accomplishes quite a bit. First it firmly plants the Next Generation crew on their footing as film stars. However it also tells a fantastic story in which the crew of the Enterprise is forced to travel back in time to do battle with the Borg. First Contact is easily the best of the Next Gen feature films and we highly recommend it to fans of The Next Generations.

As the first Next Generation feature film, it has some flaws — for instance the story is not entirely “logical.” However, the film also contains some pivotal moments for the franchise. Could Generations have been better? Yes. But as it is it stands as a quality entry into the Star Trek canon.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is one of our favorite DVDs in the series. It is a tale of political intrigue, smartly written by Nicholas Meyer and Denny Martin Flynn that captures the heart of the series. While most fans consider VI to be a solid outing, some consider the best of the even numbered Star Trek films — thus making it the best of the franchise.

While we may not be willing to go there, we think that The Undiscovered Country is one of the better adventures and a must have DVD for Star Trek fans.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier has been much maligned. Roger Ebert bluntly said, “Of all the Star Trek films, this is the worst.” And, indeed, the film does have flaws. However, it is also a noteworthy entry into the Star Trek catalog for a number of reasons. The interplay between the characters is terrific and Kirk (William Shatner) has a few memorable scenes — especially recounting the value of “pain.”

Star Trek III is certainly, in our opinion, the best of the odd numbered original Star Trek feature films. The film also marks the directorial debut of Leonard Nimoy who acquits himself well. Search for Spock was a hit upon its release and though it has aged somewhat in the last 20 years still provides a heck of a whallop. Especially touching is Kirk’s reaction to the death of his son. Nimoy gave all of the actors a tremendous amount of meat on which to chew on it this installment, however, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) is especially allowed to shine.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is among our favorite adventures, and one of the best Star Trek on DVD. If, for some reason, you do not own it, it is a great time to add it to your Star Trek DVD collection.

Veteran director Robert Wise (West Side Story) directs the first theatrical Star Trek adventure. Though fan reaction during the original run was mixed, the film became an unquestioned box office smash and set the stage for a spirited run of Star Trek cinematic adventures. The films finds Captain Kirk (William Shatner, of course) commanding the crew of the Enterprise into contact with V’Ger an omnipotent entity tearing its way towards Earth. Kirk and his comrades must find a way to determine the threat posed by V’Ger to Starfleet and to take the appropriate action.

New cast members featured in Star Trek: The Motion Picture include a new First Officer on board the enterprise (Stephen Collins) and an alluring (and hairless) new Lieutenant (Persis Khambatta). While this film has its obvious weak and strong points, it remains essential viewing for Trekkies and deserves a place in your collection of Star Trek DVDs.

I prefer the Blu-Ray format, but not everyone has it so we’ve got both links.

For those of you who haven’t seen the 2009 version of Star Trek, I must ask, “What is the matter with you?!?” Now some long time fans of the series haven’t been thrilled with J.J. Abrams reboot but most of us absolutely love it. If you haven’t been a fan of Trek and want to check it out, I think that the new movie is the most accessible Star Trek we’ve ever witnessed.
