Star Trek XII

The latest news on Star Trek XII is here! On this page, I will be listing all the latest information on the near-certain to be announced new sequel. At the moment it is some weeks before the release of JJ Abrams’ new Star Trek, which will be the eleventh in the Star Trek series.

Assuming that Star Trek is a hit, and that is no minor assumption, Star Trek XII becomes an absolute certainty to occur. Now, this latest Star Trek, which features Chris Pine, Eric Bana and Zachary Quinto, is rumored to have been budgeted at $200 million making it, by far, the costliest Trek adventure to date. In order for Star Trek XII to be greenlit by the folks at Paramount, one would assume that the Abrams adventure would have to gross somewhere north of $200 in the United States and somewhere around $400 or more worldwide.

While this is a substantial amount of dough, the new Star Trek franchise has quite a lot going for it. First of all, the new Star Trek feature is sure to lure the longtime fans on the series back to theatres to take in a new adventure. With the previous Star Trek films grossing between $50 million and $110 million, that audience is already there.

What the Abrams team and Paramount are hoping is that by recreating the franchise with a younger cast and big budget for special effects that they can lure the summer blockbuster crowd into the cineplex. This is a bit of gamble, but I would be very surprised if it was not successful.

When one considers how recent sci-fi summer fare such as Transformers have performed with a similiar cast (as far as name recognition goes) and a similiar budget it doesn’t stretch the imagination to think that the new Star Trek feature can attain a similiar level of success. So when the audiences are combined, the long time fans and the younger blockbuster set, it is very likely that the movie will be successful to enough to trigger more Star Trek features down the road.

So, we are going to have to take a wait and see attitude. I think that it is more likely than not, with this creative team as well as Paramount Studio’s desire to launch a new franchise, that the film will be a massive success. Therefore I would say it will not be long, maybe as soon as June, before official word on the preproduction of Star Trek XII leaks out of Los Angeles.

I believe that we will see and hear word on Star Trek XII before the mid-summer. As a lifelong Trekkie myself, I am quite excited to see the J.J. Abrams Star Trek take off, leading to many more sequels and many more Star Trek adventures.

I plan to keep Star Trek DVD updated with all the latest news (as soon as it comes forward) as Star Trek XII. For now, I can’t wait for Star Trek XI to be released.
